About Kentucky Flags

What's here

A registry of every county and city (plus the state and other places), with the flags each flies today and the ones it flew before. Efforts: pages for people working to give a place a new flag. Stories of places that did it, so others can learn from them.

Neutral by design

Kentucky Flags hosts efforts but doesn't take sides. Anyone can start an effort, more than one can compete for the same place, and each effort belongs to the people who lead it. Kentucky Flags isn't affiliated with the Commonwealth of Kentucky or any city or county government.

Looking for a new flag

We don't judge anyone's flag. A place is looking for a new flag when 10 people who live there, or have ties there, raise their hands on its page. Each hand is confirmed by email, and those people are the first to hear when an effort or challenge starts.

How editing works

Document what you know; others will improve it. Anyone can send a flag, image, fact, correction, story or effort. A small group of editors reviews each submission before it's published, and credits contributors who want credit. Every fact and flag is marked Unverified, Sourced or Confirmed (by the place or the designer).

Images are labeled by quality, from 1 to 5, and we show the best one we have:

Licensing

Text contributed to Kentucky Flags is licensed CC BY-SA 4.0. Each image carries its own license and credit. Flag designs belong to their governments or designers; the license for each proposed flag is chosen by its effort's lead.

Credit isn't permission. We publish images that contributors made themselves, that are freely licensed or official, or whose source's published terms allow reuse with credit. For anything else, we link to the source instead and work toward our own redraw.
