The case
Kentucky's flag puts the state seal on a navy field. It is a fine seal, but a hard flag: at a distance it reads as a blue rectangle with a small circle, and almost no one can draw it from memory. In a 2001 survey by the North American Vexillological Association it ranked 66th of 72 state, territorial and provincial flags.
The Commonwealth Star keeps what Kentuckians already know: the blue field, the goldenrod, the green of the bluegrass, and the motto "United we stand, divided we fall." It turns them into one shape that works on a flagpole, a sticker, a jersey or a child's drawing.
This is a first draft of the case. The effort lead will expand it.
