About this flag

Kentucky's official flag was adopted by the General Assembly on March 26, 1918. It shows the seal of the Commonwealth on a navy blue field, with the words "Commonwealth of Kentucky" above and sprigs of goldenrod, the state flower, below.

The seal shows a pioneer and a statesman embracing. Popular legend names them Daniel Boone and Henry Clay; the official reading is that they stand for all such Kentuckians together, above the motto "United we stand, divided we fall."

The flag was designed by Jesse Cox Burgess, an art teacher in Frankfort, and standardized on June 14, 1962. State law sets its length at 1.9 times its width and the seal and wreath at about two-thirds of its width.

In a 2001 survey by the North American Vexillological Association, it ranked 66th of 72 U.S. state, territorial and Canadian provincial flags.
